York Canoe Club is a friendly canoe club with a diverse membership, based in the centre of York. Experienced paddlers are always welcome, and we provide a network where you can get out with like minded paddlers most weekends. Beginners are equally welcome and we have an established induction programme to introduce you to the sport.
Most of our time is spent white water kayaking, but there are oppotunities for flat water paddling on the Ouse and open boating for those who prefer one blade, particularly on club nights.
We meet every Wednesday throughout the year
- Winter – Yearsley Swimming pool (8.15 – 9.30pm)
- Summer – River Ouse at Rowntrees park (6.45pm – dark)
– Linton Weir (last Wednesday of the month in summer)
After training you will find us at a local pub; Slip Inn in the summer and Brigadier Gerard, Monkgate in the winter.
Most weekends there is a trip organised either by the club or by members. You will find details of these posted on our Facebook page.
You can join the club no matter what, if any, past experience you may have in kayaking and canoeing. We are always keen to see experienced paddlers and can help you develop your area of interest; paddling, leadership, coaching. There are always people keen to get out and have fun on the water locally or further afield.
If you are new to the sport we have a coaching programme to help you develop your skills at a pace that you are comfortable with. A beginners course runs every three months or so, to develop your key kayaking skills (this course closely follows the BCU 1 star award).
When you are ready to get onto moving water, we run an introduction to white water course, this teachs you the basic techniques for moving water. This course is a pre-requisite of Open to All trips for those new to the sport.
All club coaching is free, provided by experienced members. We also provide opportunities to progress your paddling with subsidised training on courses such as First Aid, White Water Safety and Rescue, Coaching and Leadership awards.
All of the necessary equipment to get you started can be hired at a nominal fee if required. We have a fleet of kayaks as well as an odd open boat and white water racers. Additionally we can provide buoyancy aids, helmets, waterproof cags, wet-suits, spraydecks and paddles. When you are ready to buy your own kit, there is a wealth of experience and advice available to ensure you get the right bit of kit. Membership also gives you discount at a number of kayak shops.
We are a fully affiliated senior British Canoeing club; This provides all of our members with third party liability insurance cover for all club trips. Click on the link for more details.
